SONGS OF THE PAGES: Before We Were Strangers, ‘To the Green-eyed Lovebird’

Have you ever read a book that gave you too many emotions that you couldn’t possibly put those emotions into words? Well, thank the heavens for the gift of m u s i c, right?

They say you’d know a person based on the music she listens to, and for me to share my playlists to the world would be like cheating on myself because I hold them to my heart dearly.

The idea of creating a playlist based on a book came up to me on the night I finished reading Before We Were Strangers by Renee Carlino.

23309634A love story about a Craigslist “missed connection” post that gives two people a second chance at love fifteen years after they were separated in New York City.

I love the whole premise of a rekindled love, and this book was so hopeful and beautiful and made me fall in love with New York.

I initially gave this book 3 stars for the weird pacing and, for me, the lack of intensity. But after finding myself unable to get it out of my mind, I thought 4 stars would be more fitting.

In this book, Matt is a photographer and Grace is a musician. This playlist will include songs mentioned in the book (JEFF BUCKLEY!!) and some that I love and thought would make a perfect soundtrack for the Matt and Grace’s love story.

‘Hallelujah’ – Jeff Buckley

Baby, I’ve been here before
I’ve seen this room and I’ve walked this floor
You know, I used to live alone before I knew you
And I’ve seen your flag on the marble arch
And love is not a victory march
It’s a cold and it’s a broken Hallelujah

‘Lover, You Should’ve Come Over’ – Jeff Buckley

It’s never over, my kingdom for a kiss upon her shoulder
It’s never over, all my riches for her smiles when i slept so soft against her
It’s never over, all my blood for the sweetness of her laughter
It’s never over, she’s the tear that hangs inside my soul forever

‘Outro’ – M83

I’m the king of my own land.
Facing tempests of dust, I’ll fight until the end.
Creatures of my dreams raise up and dance with me!
Now and forever, I’m your king!

‘We Don’t Eat’ – James Vincent McMorrow

Me, I was holding all of my secrets soft and hid
Pages were folded, then there was nothing at all
So if in the future I might need myself a savior
I’ll remember what was written on that wall

‘Flightless Bird, American Mouth’ – Iron & Wine

Then when the cops closed the fair
I cut my long baby hair
Stole me a dog-eared map
And called for you everywhere

‘Bloom’ –  Paper Kites

When the evening pulls the sun down
And the day is almost through
Oh, the whole world, it is sleeping
But my world is you

‘Nicest Thing’ – Kate Nash

I wish that without me your heart would break
I wish that without me you’d be spending the rest of your nights awake
I wish that without me you couldn’t eat
I wish I was the last thing on your mind before you went to sleep

‘Youth’ – Daughter

Well I’ve lost it all, I’m just a silhouette
A lifeless face that you’ll soon forget
My eyes are damp from the words you left
Ringing in my head, when you broke my chest.
Ringing in my head, when you broke my chest.

‘Til Kingdom Come’ – Coldplay

In your tears and in your blood,
In your fire and in your flood,
I hear you laugh, I heard you sing,
“I wouldn’t change a single thing.”

‘Underground’ – Cody Fry

And the ground began to shake
No time left to hit the brake
That little light was closing in
And suddenly I’m floating
Love I see you now, oh
You found me here underground

‘Just A Dream’ – Tobias Jesso Jr.

I can’t explain the world to you
I can’t explain the things that people choose to do
There’s a thing called hate and there’s a thing called love too
Like the love I have for your mom and for you
My baby, she looked at me and she smiled

‘Can’t Stop Thinking About You’ – Tobias Jesso Jr.

Marianne, I know I made you cry
All those lonely tears
Marianne, I’m scared to apologize
After all these years
There’s got to be something I could do
I can’t stop thinking about you

‘Halo’ – Ane Brun, Linnea Olsson

You know you’re my saving grace
You’re everything I need and more
It’s written all over your face

‘Like Vineyards’ – Little India

We won’t cry anymore
We won’t fight anymore

I want to grow old with you

‘(Nice Dream)’ – Radiohead

They dug me my very own garden
Gave me sunshine, made me happy

Nice dream, nice dream, nice dream
